How is the IRS underpayment penalty calculated?+

The penalty is based on how much you underpaid, for how long, and the quarterly interest rate set by the IRS (typically 7-8% in recent years). The IRS uses Form 2210 to calculate it. Even small underpayments can result in penalties if the shortfall is large and long-standing.

Can I avoid quarterly tax penalties?+

Yes. Pay at least 90% of your current year tax liability OR 100% of last year's total tax (110% if AGI > $150,000) through quarterly payments. You can also use the annualized income installment method if your income is uneven throughout the year.
