Multiply the price by the tax rate. On $1,000 in California (8.85% combined average), tax is $88.50, total $1,088.50. To find the pre-tax price from a total you paid, divide by (1 + rate): $1,088.50 / 1.0885 = $1,000.

Which states have no sales tax?+

Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon have no statewide sales tax. Alaska and Montana still allow local taxes (Alaska averages 1.82% locally). The highest combined rates are in Tennessee (9.55%) and Louisiana (9.55%).

What is the difference between state and local sales tax?+
