Required Minimum Distribution Calculator
Calculate your IRS-required RMD based on age and account balance
Total in traditional IRAs, 401(k)s, 403(b)s, etc.
At age 73, the IRS requires you to withdraw $18,868 from your retirement accounts this year. Missing this deadline could cost you $4,717 in penalties.
Uses IRS Uniform Lifetime Table (Table III) for 2026. If your spouse is more than 10 years younger and the sole beneficiary, use Table II (Joint Life). Does not include RMDs from inherited IRAs (Table I). SECURE 2.0 raised the RMD age to 73 (born 1951-1959) and 75 (born 1960+). Roth IRAs have no RMDs during the owner's lifetime.

Frequently Asked Questions
When do I need to start taking RMDs?+
Under SECURE 2.0, RMDs begin at age 73 (for those born 1951-1959) or age 75 (born 1960+). Your first RMD must be taken by April 1 of the year after you turn 73/75. After that, all RMDs must be taken by December 31 each year.
How is my RMD calculated?+
RMD = Account balance ÷ Distribution period (from IRS Table III). Example: $500,000 account at age 73 → distribution period is 26.5 → RMD = $18,868. The divisor decreases each year, so RMDs increase as you age.
What is the penalty for not taking my RMD?+
The penalty for missing an RMD was 50% of the amount not withdrawn. Under SECURE 2.0, it's reduced to 25% (and 10% if corrected within the correction window). Even at 25%, it's harsh: missing a $20,000 RMD costs a $5,000 penalty.
